How to Stop Condensation in a Metal Shed

Published

Water droplets on a window pane

You open the metal shed on a cold morning and the roof’s dripping like a rainforest. Tools rusting, cardboard going soggy, the bike looking sorry for itself. It’s not a leak. It’s condensation, and it’s the most common gripe with metal sheds.

The good news is it’s very fixable.

Why metal sheds get condensation

Warm, moist air hits the cold metal panels and the moisture turns back into water, exactly like a cold can of drink on a summer’s day. Metal cools down fast overnight, so it’s worst in spring and autumn when days are mild and nights are cold. Moisture rising from the ground underneath makes it much worse.

1. Stop moisture coming up from the ground

This is the big one. A metal shed on bare soil or grass is sitting on a giant sponge. Put it on a proper base, ideally concrete or slabs with a damp-proof membrane underneath. Our shed base guide explains how.

2. Ventilate

Moving air carries moisture out before it settles. Most good metal sheds have vents built in. Keep them clear, and open the doors on dry, breezy days. If yours doesn’t have vents, adding a couple of simple louvre vents high on opposite walls makes a real difference.

3. Fit an anti-condensation membrane

Sticking an anti-condensation (or anti-drip) membrane to the underside of the roof panels stops drips landing on your stuff. It works by holding the moisture until it evaporates. It’s an afternoon’s job.

4. Don’t bring moisture in

  • Let wet lawnmowers, bikes and tools dry before you put them away.
  • Don’t store damp logs or grass clippings inside.
  • Avoid paraffin or gas heaters, which add lots of moisture to the air.
  • A moisture trap or small dehumidifier helps in really damp spots.

5. Insulate if you use it a lot

If you’re working in the shed regularly, lining the walls and roof with insulation board keeps the panels warmer and cuts condensation right down. At that point, a wooden shed or log cabin might suit you better.
