Summerhouses and log cabins can look pretty similar in the brochure: timber, big windows, double doors. But they’re built for different jobs, and picking the wrong one is an expensive mistake.
The short version
- Summerhouse: a light, airy space for sunny days. Thinner walls, lots of glass, usually cheaper.
- Log cabin: a solid building made from interlocking logs. Thicker walls, warmer, usable all year.
Wall thickness is the big difference
Summerhouses are usually clad in 12-16mm boards on a timber frame. Log cabins are built from solid interlocking logs, typically 19mm to 44mm thick or more. Those thicker walls hold heat, block noise and make the building far sturdier.

Thinking of working from it?
Go for a log cabin with at least 28mm walls, double glazing and an insulated floor and roof. Or look at purpose-built garden offices. Don’t forget the base: log cabins are heavy and need a solid concrete or slab base. See our shed base guide.
